How to keep going now that Google pigeon is out?

It is not uncommon for Google to keep rolling out newer versions of its algorithms and updates. This time it came up with a new algorithm, solely meant to refine local search results.

Since it has not given any official name to it, webmasters are calling it ‘Google Pigeon’ for the time being. They claim that Pigeon will offer more accurate and relevant local results, applicable to both map and web-based search queries.

The rankings for many local businesses have gone completely haywire, and all the SEO experts are trying to analyze the changes implemented. Page layouts and local results are continuing to change every day, making it harder for experts to recognize any particular pattern or reasons behind those changes.

It is still a little ambiguous as to exactly what steps should be taken by those who are negatively impacted by this update. However, after careful analysis here is what SEO services in New York can make from it. This is what webmasters have found so far:
  • The update has only affected queries in English language in the US
  • Google pigeon unlike previous updates does not penalize websites; it is only for refining the searches
  • The search results that Google shows in the form of 7-packs are facing a reduction
  • There is an improvement in 3-pack results
  • There is a drop in the duplicate search results
  • The radius of local search has been reduced for most of the local queries
  • It has been observed that pigeon is majorly favoring directory websites (probably due to the fact that such websites are more authoritative)
  • In SERPs that provide local Carousel results, it is showing directories in most of the cases for local businesses
  • Another observation says that for map pack and Carousel results, Google is favoring local businesses over brands. For example when a user searches for the query ‘pizza’, he is more likely to see local pizza shops over Domino’s.

What to do now:

  • Optimize the content of your site for important keywords
  • Optimize the content for local area
  • Include H1s, alt tags, state/city name in the title tag
  • Encourage customers to leave positive reviews about your business
  • Work on optimizing Google My business listings
  • Work on interacting with fans and customers and engage them via social media
